Blog Spotlight, Third Edition

Nov 30, 2012

I'm so delighted to be bringing back this feature (it's a personal favourite) and to be featuring Virginie of Virginie's Cinema for my third edition of Blog Spotlight. I absolutely love being able to introduce you guys to my favourite bloggers, and learn a little bit more about these amazing ladies myself. I discovered Virginie early on when I first started blogging and fell head over heels for her blog, personal style and gorgeous photography - all of which have been such an inspiration to me. Plus, I love that this gorgeous gal is a fellow Canadian. Enjoy the interview!

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself?
My name is Virginie (vee-jee-nee) and I am French Canadian. I am married to the man of my dreams and together we make movies (I produce, he writes and directs). I am known for smiling a lot and having an incommensurable admiration for Brigitte Bardot and all things French New Wave. My blog is Virginie's Cinema and I am also the owner of Pretty Colourful Vintage

2. What inspires you the most about having a fashion blog?
What is most inspiring about blogging to me is the readers and the community of bloggers. I love having a conversation with my readers on subjects that are dear to my heart, I love being able to share the good and the bad with them. And I love reading other blogs too so so much! For me, blogs are the absolute greatest source of inspiration in my style and have democratized personal style in a way that really speaks to me.

3. How do you find your own sense of personal style evolving?
I used to be a very emotional shopper: I would purchase things that would appeal to my eyes even though maybe they weren't the best fit for my body type. These days, I approach building my looks in the same way I approach art direction in a movie, in a more methodological way. To me, it's a lot about colours, textures, proportions and the universe these components create together. I have also changed the way I shop drastically in the past few years and that has impacted my style. I try to stay away from garments made in poor working conditions and now wear a lot of second hand or vintage clothes. It's more inspiring to me as a shopping process. I have also found that my journey through style evolution was also a journey of self discovery for me

4. Aside from fashion blogging, what are some of your other passions?
Cinema is a huge passion for me and I am SO lucky that my career is in this field! I could watch films and talk about movies all night long! I am also deeply passionate about photography and documenting everyday life, my camera is definitely my favorite accessory! Creative consumerism is also something I have a growing passion about. I love wearing vintage garments, thrifting, up cycling and swapping. It's a subject I love spreading the word about since it's an ecological, socially responsible and creative way to build one's closet. I'm lucky that I can share all these passions with my readers on the blog and via my online boutique.

5. What are some of your favorite things about living in Montreal?
Montreal is such a beautiful, vibrant and culturally diverse city, I honestly find inspiration at every corner! It's a city where you can be exactly yourself and no one will pass jugement or stare at you, which is a luxury! It's a bilingual city (English and French) with a very rich art scene and so definitely a very stimulating place to grow up. Plus there are a lot of fabulous local designers like Betina Lou, Ève Gravel and Coeur de Loup.

6. Who takes your outfit pictures and do you have any photography tips?
I take all of my own outfit pictures as well as all the pictures featured on the blog. Self portrait can be challenging but I love the creative freedom it gives me! I use a tripod and a wireless remote with a 35MM lens and Canon 7D camera for the outfit pictures. I still have a lot to learn about photography but I would say about outfit pictures in particular it's important to be conscious of light and backgrounds, colours and proportions. And then experiment a lot and develop your own style! Photography is such a great way of self expression.

7. What are your dreams and aspirations for your blog?
I hope that my blog continues to be a place I can document my life, style and passions, no matter how they evolve. My most specific goal for 2013 is to make the blog bilingual, English and French, because a lot of my French readers would like it and it would represent even better myself and the culture I grew up in. Plus my writing might be a lot more eloquent in my first language ;)

8. If money was no object what dream wardrobe piece would you purchase?
I am a frugal shopper and don't think that price equals value when it comes to garments, but I would love to own a vintage Chanel purse one day. Such a classic piece that could stay with me no matter how my style changes.

9. What's your current day off uniform?
Sweater dresses, colourful tights and vintage leather boots!

10. Do you have any tips for new or aspiring fashion bloggers?
I would say take your time and develop your branding and your niche before putting your blog online. Take a few months to try a few features, see what works better for you and what doesn't. When I launched my blog, I had no idea how to do HTML, who my readers would be or how I would photograph myself and I wish I had taken a bit more time to build my blog before putting it online. Although it was a very interesting learning curve, I'm a bit shy that so many people were witnesses of it. Let's say there were some pretty explorative posts at first ;)

A BIG thank you to Virginie for this awesome interview! Hope you guys enjoyed learning a little bit more about this lovely lady! Be sure to pop on over to her blog (to say hi!) and follow along. You can also connect with her via Twitter! Hope everyone is enjoying a fantastic Friday + happy almost weekend, guys!

Blog Spotlight: Second Edition!

I'm so thrilled to be featuring Andrea of Blonde Bedhead for my second edition of blog spotlight! I absolutely love being able to introduce you guys to my favourite bloggers, and learn a little bit more about these amazing blogging lovelies myself! When it comes to personal style blogs, I quickly fell head-over-heels for Andrea's. I love her ability for mixing beautiful feminine pieces with a more urban & edgy aesthetic, and she always features the most enviable shoes. Be sure to check out her blog; you will love her gorgeous style & sassy personality. Enjoy the interview!

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself? Hello! I'm Andrea, a Michigan native, living and working in Chicago. I run the blog, Blonde Bedhead, but I also photograph weddings and work in advertising.

2. What inspired you to start your fashion blog? Tieka of Selective Potential really inspired me because I didn't really know fashion blogs existed before she started hers, but I loved to photograph fashion shoots with friends, write freelance fashion-related articles and I also just love to have fun with personal style and fashion. It just made sense to start this little hobby where all the things I was passionate about would be in one singular place.

3. How has your personal sense of style evolved over the blogging years? My style has definitely evolved. I take bigger risks and have more confidence to wear bold colors and accessories. I also developed a deep affinity for ridiculous shoes, which I never had until I started the blog and started noticing the amazing shoes that exist out there!

4. Aside from fashion blogging, what are some of your other passions? Like I mentioned earlier, I'm a photographer and focus primarily on portrait and wedding work. It's so much fun for me to photograph weddings, but then to also schedule fun shoots with friends that have amazing styles that inspire me and share them on my blog. I also love animals and on the rare occasion I can get back to my parents' home, I like to visit the horses and goats and annoy the cat with my constant pestering.

5. What are some of your favorite things about living in Chicago? Everywhere you go in Chicago, there is a great restaurant near and the choices are endless. I love food, particularly greasy, delicious foods, so when I see a pub or old diner, I'm thrilled! I also love the access I have to fun shops like TopShop, Zara and other small boutiques and vintage shops that are in Chicago. It's so easy to go shopping and spend the entire day visiting just one neighborhood for their shops!
6. Who takes your outfit pictures and do you have any photography tips? I've trained my boyfriend how to use my camera and I must say, he's become quite the little photographer. He has a great eye and listens to me, which helps, since I know what I like. My main photography tips for outfit photos is to try to shoot outside and not in direct sunlight! Direct sunlight can be so harsh if you're not used to working with that kind of light and outside photos just have a higher quality feel to them to indoor lighting of a house. My second tip would be to have fun and take a variety of shots like full length photos, wide angle shots and of course, a lot of detail shots!

7. What are your dreams and aspirations for your blog?
My blog has already done so much for me. It's given me a way to be creative and it's helped me land jobs. I don't think I'd ever want to blog full-time, but keep it as a fun project, so it stays fun for me, but I'd still like it to grow and for me to earn more great opportunities to work with brands I love!

8. What fall/winter trends are you most excited about? Two words: Leopard print. As if I needed an excuse to wear my favorite print, but it's hot this season and I'm so ecstatic that I can find coats, tops, pants, skirts, shoes, belts, etc in the print.

9. What’s your current go to outfit? My go to outfit is always an over-sized grey top, black skinnies, a crazy heeled black boot and a leather jacket. It's what I feel most comfortable in and I own so many of the same grey type of shirt, pants, boots and jackets, it's easy for me to recreate.

10. Do you have any tips for new or aspiring fashion bloggers? My tip is to start it because you love whatever you love--whether it's personal style, photography, fashion, street-style and you want to talk about it and share with others, not because you want free shit. That will come later, I promise.

Aw, a BIG thank you to Andrea for this fantastic interview! Hope you guys enjoyed learning a little bit more about this fabulous gal! I absolutely adored reading all of her answers. Be sure to pop on over to her blog (to say hi!) and follow along. You can also connect her with her via Twitter! Hope everyone is enjoying a fantastic Friday, and happy almost weekend, guys!!  xo

Blog Spotlight: Introducing Kate of O My Heart!

Jun 15, 2011

Welcome to the first edition of a new feature here at Girl & Closet. I'm so thrilled to introduce the beautiful, kind and chic Kate of O My Heart. I found Kate's blog earlier this year and was thrilled to connect with a fellow Canadian blogger. I quickly fell for Kate's girly & classy aesthetic, and she's an absolute sweetheart too. Be sure to check out her blog; you will love her gorgeous style!! Enjoy the interview!
1. Tell us a little bit about yourself?
Haha, what would you like to know? My name is Kate, I'm in my late twenties & live on the east coast of Canada! I'm kind and affectionate and a little bit shy, with a love for nachos, music, fruit smoothies and of course, a slight obsession with fashion & personal style blogs!

2. What inspired you to start your fashion blog?
I had been reading fashion blogs for about two years by the time I started my blog and I just kept finding myself wanting to join in... it looked so fun! I always kept folders on my desktop where I'd save photos that inspired me or items I was lusting over, and I loved the idea being able to keep that all in one place & share it with others! I was incredibly nervous to start one though and kept it a secret for quite a while!
3. How has your personal sense of style evolved over the blogging years?
My personal style has definitely changed since starting my blog. I went through a weird phase about 4 months into my blog where I looked at my photos and realized my style was not at all what I wanted it to be. What I liked in my head and what was saved in all of my inspiration folders was not at all what I was portraying. I think over the last year I've become a little less cutesy and a little more polished, which as a girl in my late 20's, was one of the things I wanted to achieve.

4. Aside from fashion blogging, what are some of your other passions?
People! The people in my life - my family, my boyfriend, my friends. Those are my passions. Also, finding new music. I possess no musical talent myself, other than a good ear... I love finding new bands to love, and spend a lot of time looking for something new to listen to!

5. What do you love doing on your days off?
My days off are usually really low key. I spend a lot of time with the fella or with friends, watching movies, shopping, or going to see local bands. I like to go to fitness classes at the gym. I like to go out for dinner or make a big meal when I have the time. Though I also like to take advantage of my days off to take outfit photos for the blog! A dream day would probably involve going to an amusement park - I am a bit of a roller coaster junkie but we don't have any near here! Trips to big cities often involve scouting one out!
6. Who takes your outfit pictures and do you have any photography tips?
Most of my photos are taken by myself, with a tripod and a camera remote! Occasionally the fella will take photos for me, and sometimes I get together with blogger pals Candice of Brilliant Sugar or Kristin of Doll Parade for photo sessions! As for tips, my biggest tip is to take photos in good natural light and to not use a flash. I find shooting in the shade works best, or on a slightly overcast day.

7. What are your dreams and aspirations for your blog?
I don't have any set goals for my blog at this point - I just want to keep doing it, keep growing it, and see where it takes me! It's just a fun hobby for me, so anything that happens beyond that is just a bonus!
8. What summer trends are you absolutely loving right now?
Oh gosh, there are so many fun trends right now. I am pretty obsessed with loose fitting blouses paired with shorts & pumps - I feel like this will be my summer uniform! I am also really loving the casual coolness of boat shoes & loafers. And, of course, all the bold, bright colors, color blocking, and touches of neon!

9. What’s your current go to outfit?
As I mentioned above, all I want to wear right now is loose fitting blouses with shorts. However, I only have a couple of these in my closet, so while it's not my go-to outfit fully yet, it will be! When I’m in a big rush I generally throw on stripes – easy & chic!
10. Do you have any tips for new or aspiring fashion bloggers?
There are so many different aspects to consider, but I guess technically speaking, make your outfit photos big enough that we can easily see the details. I always find it frustrating going to a blog and seeing tiny photos where I can't make out any of the details of what you're wearing! Also, when you comment on other blogs, try to be sincere. Avoid leaving comments that make any reference to "If you follow me, I'll follow you!" - to be honest, I purposely won't go visit your blog if you've left that as a comment. And most importantly, be yourself, be sincere, and try not to get caught up in it all. While blogging has a ton of positive aspects, it also has a dark side... jealousy, feeling inferior, feeling like you "need" certain items to keep up with other bloggers, getting down on yourself for not having as many followers or as many comments as someone else, etc. Try not to let this stuff get you down, and just try to stay true to yourself and what you like. Try to remember you're doing this for FUN! If it's not fun, something needs to change!

A BIG thank you to Kate for this wonderful interview! Isn't she adorable, you guys?! You can visit her blog here: O My Heart ...and stay tuned for the second edition of "blog spotlight." I'll be doing the next one in August. Hope everyone is having the loveliest of Wednesdays. xx veronika
