The past few days have been blissfully quiet. Just the way I like it! Mornings have been spent going for fall walks with Scout (our pooch) and marveling at all the leaves. Our neighbourhood is just so pretty this time of year... we’re surrounded by mountains, ocean, and so many gorgeous trees. I love seeing them turn rich hues. It’s so inspiring + it immediately lifts my mood. There’s nothing better than walking around in a cozy sweater, a hot beverage, and taking the time to witness those special life moments. I adore it!

So just the other evening, Martin & I enjoyed the cutest date. I took a few photos and I’ll be sure to share them with you guys. We decided on a date night in and baked cookies together. So fun! Neither one of us has baked before and we’re trying to learn. We made gluten free, vegan + chocolate chip cookies. Mmmm, they were incredibly tasty! Any other vegans or non-wheat eaters out there?!

As for the outfit, it’s safe to say this is my new favourite. There’s something so perfectly classic about dressing in tones of cream, black & brown. And in order to give the outfit some pop, I went with a red lip. Loved how it all came together. Also, I just finished planning out the rest of my fall outfits today, and now I’m getting so excited to share them with you. Yay! I love being organized! ;)

Carrot and Sweet Potato Soup

Oct 26, 2012

I'm excited to finally be posting my first recipe. Gosh, I blabbed on about it for long enough, right?! When it comes to cooking, I'm a huge fan of simple & healthy + I love eating as much homemade food as possible. I generally try to avoid anything that's processed or comes from a can, and I stick to buying organic too. So... with the cooler (more like freezing!) temperatures in the air, I've been living off of yummy soups, and this one is my absolute favourite...
You'll need:
  • 2 tsp olive oil
  • 3 cloves of garlic, peeled
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tsp cumin
  • 2 tbsp curry powder
  • 1 tsp ginger
  • 3 cups of baby carrots
  • 3 sweet potatoes, peeled & cut into 1 inch pieces
  • 3 1/2 cups organic vegetable broth
* I used large carrots for mine. If you do the same, be sure to cook them first and for an additional 20 minutes.

Heat oil in a large pot and saute onion + garlic. Add cumin, ginger and curry powder. Cook for 1 minute. Then add carrots, sweet potatoes and vegetable broth (sometimes I'll add 1/4 cup of coconut milk too). Bring to a boil, cover and simmer for 20 minutes or until your veggies are tender.

Once cooled, transfer to a blender & blend until smooth, then just heat and eat. Add salt & pepper to taste. So delicous!

You can find the original recipe here: low fat cooking. I altered mine with a few of my fave ingredients! :)

Hello! Guys, firstly thank you so much for your awesome comments regarding my "personal goals" post - your thoughts were so great to read + I loved being able to share my list with you.  I've been on a real roll lately! It started with a closet re-do, that led to a blog make-over (still working out a few kinks) and now I'm working on re-styling our home. Fun, right?! I'm giving it more of a EQ3/modern aesthetic. I'm ready to start new and start fresh. Unencumbered by clutter, clear on my goals and excited for a more authentic future.

Speaking of change, I'd like to occasionally mix up the content on the blog too... I'll always post about fashion because I adore it so much. But I'd love to open up my creative space to a few other posts too, like: personal posts (marriage, career & other life topics), home decor, recipes (I have one queued up for this week), photos from daily life, and at some point do a little Q&A video too.

Alright, on to the outfit. I somehow forgot about this gem of a skirt, and just discovered it on my last closet overhaul. I used to be a real prints girl but solid colours have quickly become my new favourite. And... I just noticed that J.Crew is pairing a lot of their orange hues with soft pink ones - how cute would this skirt look with a fitted sheer blush or ballet pink sweater?! I can't wait to try it!

My Personal Goals

Oct 18, 2012

Sorry guys, no second outfit post this week. It seems the flu has hit me hard! I did, however, spend a little time journaling this morning (as I always do) complete with peppermint tea, and realized it's been an embarrassingly long time since I've sat down to write out my goals. I've had lots of time to think & reflect lately, since most of my summer & fall have been spent dealing with health issues (as many of you may know), but I'm very excited to start moving towards new goals and gain a fresh perspective. Apparently, even the blog couldn't escape a little face-lift! ;) Hope you like it...
Start a personal blog: a place to store & share our lives with friends and family. And, start sharing the odd personal post on Girl & Closet too!

Create: a few new pieces for my jewelry line + take a jewelry class. Did I mention I've renamed my jewelry shop?! It's now called Fox & Clover... which I love!

Schedule a once a month artist date with myself: nature walks + bring my camera, farmers market, make a favourite recipe, afternoon tea with a friend, go to an art show or local event, craft something pretty for a friend & mail it to them, take myself out for a yummy lunch, do a yoga class, schedule a massage, take a break from work & walk around the neighbourhood, create a vision board, make a bucket list, go for a bike ride.

Once a week date nights with hubby: go out for tea & evening jazz, play pool, host a movie night + invite a few of our friends, try a new restaurant, drive into the city & explore, surprise Martin with a gift, cook dinner together, learn how to bake yummy vegan & gluten free desserts.

Social: see friends twice a month + plan for an open-house/potluck every 6 weeks.

Photography: take more photos of my daily life... visits with friends and the things I'm up to during the week.

Nest & decorate: design and re-decorate our master bedroom, create a winter garden on our patio + string little lanterns, plan for a family. Yay!

Save: do one over-payment on our mortgage every month, and contribute a percentage of our income to our savings account.

Dots & Stripes

My last post was called "morning sun" and I was seriously tempted to call this one "rain monsoon" because that's exactly what we've had the past few days. Ugh, so much rain. I forgot how much I hate wrestling with my purse, umbrella, phone, and my dog... who seems to pull just when I have everything perfectly balanced. Yes, I've been dropping most of my belongings. Haha, I'm such a baby when it comes to the rain. Martin's hinted at moving to LA, perhaps I should take him up on it.

When the rainy fall days hit, I'm all about wearing denim, cardy's and a great pair of boots. Mine are from wanted shoes and they fit like a dream - be sure to take a peek at their fall boots. So adorable! As for the rest of my outfit?! I went a little crazy with the pattern mixing but I love both of these together: abstract stripes & abstract polka dots. Seems like they were made for one another... a fun look for a day of dodging rain puddles and running errands.

For tomorrow, I'm planning a little date night for Martin & I. I'll be surprising him (unless he reads this post, haha) with a yummy dinner. I'm making yam & carrot fries, grilled fish, and for dessert I'll be baking apples in rice milk + dates. Mmmm, I can't wait. And, I have every intention to start sharing recipes with you guys. This week is the week. I swear!

Morning Sun

These photos were taken late last week, right before the temperatures fell. But my goodness, so far this fall has been ridiculously glorious. Warm, so warm, and absolutely no rain. But apparently all good things must come to an end because this week we've been getting hit with cold temperatures and loads of rain. Consider yourselves warned... my next outfit post may include an umbrella, tights & a scarf! ;)

I purchased this super pretty dress earlier this summer from Madewell - it was actually my first purchase from them and I'm now officially addicted to that store. And I know you're nodding your head, Lynn... hehe, my fellow Madewell soul mate. I'm hoping to re-style the dress again once our late fall temperatures hit. Any suggestions?! I'd love to hear your ideas; how fun would it be to style it based on your feedback.

Other than that, I've been on a bit of a shopping binge as of late. I just bought new skin care from philosophy and earth science, as well as Moroccan oil (amazing!) along with bumble and bumble hair products. I also recently did a major closet over-haul and purchased a new basics wardrobe. And now, I'm eying some fun pieces from Ruche to spice up those basics. They have the prettiest things for fall right now. I'm certain I could just order the whole darn site. Haha, oh boy, it's tempting!!

Thanksgiving Weekend

Oct 9, 2012

Ah, long weekends! We just enjoyed Canadian Thanksgiving this weekend + both Martin & I had four days off. Oh bliss. Is there anything better than time spent with your loved ones and getting to eat ridiculous amounts of pumpkin pie?! Nope, I think not. We also enjoyed some of the warmest fall weather (amazing!), strolled through the village, stopped for some Sunday coffee and ended it all off with a nap. A perfect long weekend in my books! ;)
Mmm, that muffin was so good. Haha, I really can't stop thinking about it! Oh, and many of you have asked what kind of breed our dog is... he's a poodle & American Eskimo cross, and seriously the sweetest. Lastly, I'll be back with a fantastic giveaway on Wednesday and an outfit post too. See you then!

Evolving

So far this fall, it seems I've been drawn to simple outfits, perhaps not as dynamic to photograph but definitely where my style seems to be heading. I'm loving sharp knee length trench coats, dresses in muted tones (Madewell has the prettiest ones), oatmeal hued cashmere cardigans, and simple heels. Yup, so different from where I was a year ago. What about you guys, are you finding your own fashion choices to be changing or evolving this fall?!

My honey (aka Martin) and I took these photos on our most recent date night. Truth be told, our date nights have been a bit of a challenge lately. I'm still on my super strict hypo-allergenic diet and can't eat at any restaurants... not fun, can you believe it's already been three months?! Thankfully, I'm finally getting my allergy test results this weekend and I'm counting down the days for when I can visit a super fabulous & tasty restaurant - you can bet I'll be going all out for that!!

Is anyone else counting down for the weekend?! I so am! Martin has four days off and we have lots of fun plans: spending an afternoon with his parents for thanksgiving, it's my moms big 60th birthday on Sunday, there's talk of doing a little day trip and visiting our local antique fair. I'm on the lookout for a round brocade style mirror which I'll be painting a powder blue and hanging above our bed. Well on that note, have a great day guys... and a happy Thanksgiving to all my fellow Canadians!

Quiet Days Of Fall

Oct 1, 2012

Fall seems like the perfect time to slow life down. I've been spending mine making delicious soups & dreaming up cookie recipes, as well as ending my work days off with the most gorgeous walks. I love seeing all of the colours, feeling that crisp air, and seeing the sun set over the ocean. Pretty great! Fall is also my favourite time to reflect and start new projects. So far, I've been working on a new jewelry collection and a re-brand of my jewelry shop. Yay, can't wait to share! I'm also tackling our bedroom and painting a striped feature wall. So fun, right?! Hope you're enjoying a beautiful fall day, friends!
