SouthPort, South Surrey

Jan 14, 2013

Hello! Sorry for the lack of posts last week, guys. I had a bit of a health setback, and as a result, ended up laying pretty low. But thankfully, I'm back on my feet and paying extra attention to what I eat. For the past six months I've been following a hypo-allergenic diet, but lately I've been sneaking in a bit of sugar here & there (oh, the holidays) and I ended up having a pretty awful reaction to it. Ugh. So this week, I'm stepping back and taking care of myself: hitting the gym, doing my yoga, and experimenting with sugar-free desserts. Sheesh, I should have known better!

Ok, on to the post! We've finally been getting hit with some much needed sunshine, so Martin & I saw this as the perfect opportunity to head out to Southport in White Rock. We're in the area often visiting our friends Clint & Erin, and we also attend church there. But we've never explored this particular nook; it's right beside a nature-rich golf course. The houses were so lovely + I adored the Cape Cod feel to them... and (eek) are about a million dollars. I swear, the real estate prices are crazy here in Vancouver! We enjoyed a fantastic walk along the river though, grabbed some Japanese food, and watched Scout (our pooch) enjoy some major off-leash adventure time. He had to say hello to everyone we met, haha, too cute! What an awesome weekend! What did you guys get up to?!...

  1. Honestly, Veronika, I don't know how you live without sugar... it takes so much discipline, I don't think anyone can blame you for testing your luck! What a shame you had a bad reaction, but very glad to hear you're on the mend! I've never been to South Port but it looks like it would be worth the drive. Ths scenery is just stunning and so are you. I'm voting you take that black and white snapshot and make it your new blog header. Just saying ;)

  4. You can call a very pretty place on this earth your home, I think. It just looks all so lovely... :)

I hope you get totally back on track asap! It's really hard to be that strict when it comes to food, especially when all the ones around you are allowed to eat what they want, I guess. :(

    Have a great week.
    Love, Nadine

  7. Sorry to hear about your health set back - the connection between food and health is crazy to me, but the more I study, the more I learn how direct a relationship those two things have! Good luck cutting out the sugar, you strong lady!

  15. I can't believe all the diet changes you had to make to keep those reactions at bay... takes so much discipline! You should share some of your sugar-free dessert recipes once you've figured some out that work :)

Love the pictures too! I've never been to that part of Surrey either... one of my closest friends is from South Surrey near White Rock and I still haven't even made it out there!

  23. Veronika, I'm so glad to hear you're recovering and feeling better. The holidays really are full of temptations but we pay for giving in afterwards...I din't feel too well the first couple of days of the year, and my mom really got the worst of it; she even had to spend a few days in the hospital. Thankfully she's on the mend now and feeling much better.

Over the last few months, I've been reading a lot about healthy eating, and eating sugar-free is a subject that pops up often, so I thought I would mention a few tips I've picked up along the way...for one, stevia is a great sweetener alternative that doesn't affect you're blood sugar (I've been sweetening my tea with it lately, and I love it!!) so you should be safe using it; also, a couple of useful resources if you're interested would be Sarah Wilson's I Quit Sugar e-book (http://www.sarahwilson.com.au/i-quit-sugar-ebook/), I haven't read it myself yet, but I've heard lots of great things about it; one more is the Econest blog, where the writer Maria has a lot of posts following Sarah Wilson's program and a few sugar-free desert recipes that I've been wanting to try: http://econest.blogspot.ca/search/label/I%20quit%20sugar

I don't know if you knew about these things, but I thought I'd mention them just in case they would be helpful; if there's anything else you'd want to know about this, please e-mail me, I'd love to help you any way I can! :)

Happy Monday! So glad to see you had a great week-end!
