This weekend, Martin & I went for a cute little walk in our neighbourhood. My goodness, I absolutely love these Georgian homes. I find this style of architecture to be so romantic: beautiful pillars, brick facades, ornate window panels. I actually (being nerdy!) looked up Georgian homes on the internet and was surprised to learn there was a tax on windows in the 18th century. The number of windows was a sign of wealth, and poor families had one window per floor or bricked them up to avoid having to pay the tax. Crazy!
I felt right at home here in my newly purchased vintage blouse. I bought this little beauty when I went shopping with the girls in Austin, Texas, during the TxSC conference. Aw, I miss them already! As for the blouse? I've also worn it loose with skinny jeans, my trusty bowler hat, and my super high Jeffrey Campbell platforms - really cute too! But for our walk, I chose an easy & comfy look!
Last but not least... friends, I'm so excited to announce that I've opened my little "Oh, Poppy!" jewelry shop - yay! I'm so happy with how all of the pieces turned out; there are twelve in total and I'll be adding a few more each month. I'm also talking to a couple local stores about carrying a few of the pieces, which is super exciting & fun. So be sure to take a peek!! xo veronika

Pretty outfits, but your information on historic window taxes is a persistent myth that won't go away. Check out this link for the specifics:http://historymyths.wordpress.com/2012/01/07/myth-builders-of-early-american-houses-built-few-windows-to-avoid-paying-the-window-tax/ and help discourage inaccurate information about our nation's heritage.
ReplyDeleteAdorable outfit! I love the skirt so much!

What fun trivia Veronika! I never imagined such a thing, but I love to find out things about history. Did you know that people used to die of lead poisening all the time from tomatoes? Since all the flatware was tin, when people ate tomatoes, the acidic tomatoe would soak up the lead in their plates and make them toxic to eat. Crazy huh? Congrats on opening your shop! I know you will do wonderfully! And, of course, your outfit is divine. Have a great Monday dear!
ReplyDeleteLoving the mixed prints, and congrats on your store, I am excited to go and take a look!

ReplyDeleteFun fact: there used to be a tax on closets, too! I don't know how we fashion bloggers would have survived in the Georgian era, but we would have lived in beautiful homes :) Just loving your vintage blouse, what a fabulous souvenir from the TxSC. And I can't wait to check out Oh Poppy, congratulations on the big opening! I actually have the page open in another window, ready to explore when I finish writing this comment :) I hope you week is off to a great start!

ReplyDeleteYou look so precious. Before you even mentioned that blouse, it popped out to me. It's so, so pretty.
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing the things that are taxed. I wonder what we're being taxed for that, in 50 or 100 years, people will wonder about.
I love the little fact about Georgian homes! Every time I see an "old style" house I miss my 1930s apartment back in the Netherlands. Old places just have so much more character!
ReplyDeleteYou fit right in with this pretty outfit. Such a gorgeous blouse, I can imagine it looks great with jeans too.
Hope you're having a good week so far. Congrats on opening "Oh, Poppy!"! I am very excited for you :-)
